Runescape Skill Guide

Agility

Introduction

Most people can’t stand training Agility, because it’s repetitive and becomes boring quickly, but it pays off when you’re at a high level. At a high agility level your energy regenerates faster. This can come in handy while training other skills where you run a lot, RuneCrafting for example. You can also use several shortcuts at a higher agility level, which will make you spend less time traveling around. There are even some areas which can only be accessed with a certain agility level!

Tips and tricks

Weight

While training agility, always try to keep your weight as low as possible. Your run energy will last longer and you have less chance to fail obstacles.

The following items can be used to decrease your weight.

Boots of Lightness
The Boots of Lightness reduces your weight by 4kg. You obtain the gloves during the Temple of Ikov quest. If you have lost them, go back to the Temple( northeast of Ardougne ), go downstairs ( a lightsource is needed ), slash through the web with a slash weapon or a knife and pick up the boots.

Penance Gloves
The Penance Gloves reduces your weight by 4-5kg. You can buy these from Commander Connad at the Barbarian Outpost once you have 150 Barbarian Assault points in each class.

Spotted Cape
A Spotted Cape reduces your weight by 2-3kg. You obtain the cape by trading 2 spotted kebbit furs and 400gp at the Fancy Dress Shop in East Varrock. The cape requires level 40 Hunter to wear.

Spottier Cape
A Spotier Cape reduces your weight by 4-5kg. You obtain the cape by trading 2 dashing kebbit furs and 800gp at the Fancy Dress Shop in East Varrock. The cape requires level 66 Hunter to wear.

Lap Bonuses
Most of the courses give a lap bonus. That means, if you complete the lap in the right order, you can some bonus experience. Because of this, completing laps is faster experience than doing one obstacle over and over again.

Use of food
The amount of damage that is done when failing an obstacle depends on your hitpoints. The higher your amount of hitpoints left, the more damage you take. So if you keep your health as low as possible you will use less food. However, don’t keep your health too low in case you accidentally click on an obstacle and fail it. Try to keep your health between 4-19. Cakes are really good food for controlling your health like this, since they only heal 4 each bite, but still heal 12 each inventory spot.

Restoring your energy
While training agility, you might want to use energy restorable items to keep your run energy high and gain faster experience.
Although there are quite some items that restore your energy, most of them aren’t worth it because they are one dose only, they cost too much or can’t be bought in large quantities.
You should go with energy or super energy potions. Energy potions are cheaper than super energies, but they restore 10% per dose and 40% per potion. The super energy potion restores 20% per dose and 80% per potion, this also means less banking, but it’s more expensive.
Do what’s best suited for you, if you can miss the money, use super energies, if not, use normal energy potions or no potions at all.

Energy potions aren’t worth it at early levels. You’re only cutting down the time by a little bit or you fail too much and waste energy running back to the obstacle.
You should start using energy potions at 70 agility at the Ape Atoll course, because you won’t fall a lot anymore. They should be used at the Dorgesh-Kaan course as well.

Agility boosts
You can boost your agility by a few levels to use shortcuts you normally couldn’t.

Note: that boosting your agility doesn’t work on all obstacles, for some you still need the required level.

The best agility boosts are:

Agility potion: Increases your agility temporarily by 3 levels.

Summer pie: Increases your agility temporarily by 5 levels and restores 10% run energy.

Summoning
You might have heard about familiars that restore your run energy, the Spirit Terrobird, making them perfect for agility training. However, this is not the case. Familiars can’t cross the obstacles, so you can’t use the familiar’s scroll.

Benefits

This part is about all the benefits of the agility skill. The main reason why people train agility is because they get access to more shortcuts and faster energy restore.

Shortcuts
If you have a high agility level, you don’t have to waste time by walking all the way, save time by using shortcuts instead! Let’s take the pipe in Taverley Dungeon for example. If you don’t have level 70 agility you have to walk a long way, wasting precious time.

Here’s a list of all the shortcuts in the game

Grapple Shortcuts
There are some shortcuts in the game that require not only a specific agility level, but also a specific strength and ranged level. To use this shortcut you need to wield a crossbow and have a mithril grapple equipped.

Courses and other training methods

Here I’ll write about the different methods of training the agility skill.

Each course has been divided in three sections: how to get there, notes and an experience table.
-Location
If you haven’t guessed yet, here you can see where the course is located. I’ve also included some ways to get there( I haven’t included walking the whole way to the course, only fast ways to get there ).
-Notes
In this section I write some information about the course that might come in handy.
-Experience table
The amount of experience you receive from each obstacle, the lap bonus and the total lap experience. The obstacles are in the same order you have to complete the lap in to receive the lap bonus, although it’s very easy to come up with the right order yourself.

Gnome Stronghold Course

Requirements:
There are no requirements for this course.
Location:
This course is located in the Tree Gnome Stronghold, south of the Grand Tree. How to get there:
  1. Use one of the Spirit Trees to teleport to the Gnome Stronghold, then walk east from here.
  2. Use a Gnome Glider to fly to the Grand Tree. Once there, go downstairs three times and walk south.
Notes:
This course is popular by beginners, since you can already use this course at level 1. Because you can’t fall you don’t need any food. You may bring weight decreasing items with you, but it’s not necessary, you’ll only stay here for approximately 2 hours.

Talk to Larry at the docks northeast of the Keldagrim entrance, northeast of Rellekka. Larry will take you to the Iceberg.

Talk with Larry(or use the ‘Tuxedo’ option) at the Iceberg to shrink you and put you into the penguin suit.
Notes:
You need a penguin suit to use this course. A penguin suit is made on a Crafting Table 3 in a Player Owned House (this doesn’t have to be your own house) and requires a plank, silk and a clockwork mechanism (made from 1 steel bar on a Crafting Table 2 or higher)

Requirements:
52 Agility
Location:
This course is located in level 52-55 wilderness, west of the Mage Arena and Pirates’ Hideout, east of the Frozen Waste Plateau.
How to get there:
Use the lever in Ardougne to teleport to the Deserted Keep(level 50 wilderness). Now go all the way west to the course.
Notes:
You only need level 52 agility to enter cross the icy ridge, not to use the obstacles in the course. This means it’s possible to use an Agility Potion at level 49-51 and train here for better experience!

Revenants
Revenants are a threat to players who train their agility at the Wilderness course. Killing revenants is pretty hard without good gear, and since you want to keep your weight as low as possible, taking fighting gear with you isn’t advised.

The best way is just to switch worlds when you encounter a revenant. However, if the revenant is on top of the hill, at the start of the course, you might want to use the special attack of the Spirit Wolf to make the revenant disappear.
For this, you need to have completed Wolf Whistle and you need some Spirit Wolf pouches and Howl Scrolls. When there is a revenant at the course, summon the Spirit Wolf and use it’s special attack on the revenant.
Keep in mind that only the start of the course, on top of the hill, is in a multi-combat zone, so when there is a revenant at the northern part of the course, I suggest you switch worlds.

Obstacle Experience gained
Pipe squeeze 12.5
Rope Swing 20
Stepping Stones 20
Log 20
Rocks 0
Lap bonus 498.9
Completed Lap 571.4

Ape Atoll

Requirements:
58 Agility
Location:
This course is located, as the name suggests, at Ape Atoll. South of the Scimitar and Runes shop to be more precisely.
How to get there:
  1. Go to the first floor( second floor for Americans ) of the Grand Tree and walk towards the bar. Talk with Daero and you’ll be teleported to the secret room. Talk to the gnome there and fly to Crash Island. Now speak to Lumdo and he’ll sail you to Ape Atoll. Walk to the course from here.
  2. Teleport to Ape Atoll(requires level 64 magic and you need to have completed the Awowogei subquest from Recipe for Disaster).

Notes:
To use this course you need to wear a Ninja Monkey Greegree and you have to have completed Monkey Madness. Although this course only needs level 48 agility, you’d better not train here until level 70 or higher, since you fail a lot here at lower levels. You fail a lot less at level 70 and you don’t fail at all at level 75+.

Obstacle Experience gained
Stepping stone 40
Climb tree 40
Monkey bars 40
Skull slope 60
Rope swing 100
Vine 300
Complete lap 580

How to get a Ninja Monkey Greegree

Buy a monkey talisman for 1000gp at the Magic shop at Ape Atoll. Now kill an Archer Monkey and pick up it’s bones. Take the bones and monkey talisman to Zooknock, located at the end of the Ape Atoll dungeon(yes, that long, annoying dungeon!). Zooknock will turn the talisman and bones into a Ninja Monkey Greegree.

Note: If you want to turn into a bigger Ninja Monkey, you have to kill Padulah (level 149) and take his bones and a monkey talisman to Zooknock instead.

Werewolf Agility Course
Requirements:
60 Agility and you need a Ring of Charos to enter the course.
Location:
This course is located at the south of the Haunted Woods.
How to get there:
  1. Walk from Fenkenstrain’s Castle to the south through the Haunted Woods. You’ll get attacked by Vampires and Leeches.
  2. Go through the underground passage behind Canifis’ Pub. When outside, go northeast. You’ll be attacked by one or two Ghasts, so there is a chance they rot your food.
Notes:
Instead of a lap bonus, you need to fetch a stick and give it to a werewolf. When you jump to the first rock, a werewolf will throw the stick. This stick always lands after the pipe squeeze. Pick it up and give it to the werewolf at the end of the course for an agility bonus.

Also, it’s worth noting that failing the zip-line does 30 damage, so be careful!

Obstacle Experience gained
Stepping stones 10 each, 50 experience in total
Hurdles 20 each, 60 experience in total
Pipe squeeze 15
Skull slope 25
Zip-line 200
Bonus (give the stick to the Werewolf) 190
Complete lap 540

Dorgesh-Kaan Course

Requirements:
70 Agility
Location:
This course is located south of Dorgesh-Kaan, the Cave Goblin City.
How to get there:
Go to the Dorgesh-Kaan market and walk all the way south from there, go up the most southern stair, go further south and again climb up the most southern stairs. Go east from here to start the course.

Notes:
You must have completed ‘Death to the Dorgeshuun’ and you need to bring a lightsource to enter the course. This course is a bit different than the other courses. Instead of only walking laps, you need to help the Cave Goblin Turgall. You start at the new power station, east of the exit to Dorgesh-Kaan. Turgall needs some items from the broken power station at the far south of the cave. Each time he asks for two items, a heavy one and a delicate one. The heavy items are too heavy to transport by grapple and the delicate items can’t be squeezed through the narrow tunnel.

You can collect a heavy object by using your spanner with the boiler and a delicate object with using the spanner with the console in the old power station.

Heavy items Delicate items Grapple
Power Box Capacitor
Lever Fuse
Cog Meter

You can reach the old power station in two ways; by using grapples or using cables/ladders as ropes and monkey bars. However, you can use a different way back to Turgall to maximize or balance agility and/or ranged experience. Use only grapples to maximize ranged experience, use only cables/ladders to maximize agility experience or use both to balance it.

Using cables and ladders
Obstacle Experience
Grapple 18 agility, 18 strength, 18 ranged
Rope balance 25 agility
Cable swing 22 agility
Swing across ladder 25 agility
Squeeze past jutting wall 7.5 agility
Squeeze through tunnel 7.5 agility
Complete trip using only grapple (delicate item only)
108 Agility, 1250 Ranged and 108 Strength
Complete trip using only cables/ladders (heavy item only)
2750 Agility
Complete trip using both cables/ladders and grapple (any item)

1429 Agility, 625 Ranged and 54 Strength

Brimhaven Agility Arena

Requirements:
1 Agility is required, though level 40+ is recommended.
Location:
This course is located in Brimhaven, in the dungeon under Cap’n Izzy No-beard’s hut. You need to pay 200gp to enter.
How to get there:
  1. Travel by boat from Ardougne to Brimhaven. Walk east from here.
  2. Use an Amulet of Glory to teleport to Karamja. Walk west, past the volcano and through the gate.
Notes:
Some obstacles in the Brimhaven Agility Arena require level 1 agility, some level 20 and some level 40. Because some obstacles can decrease your agility, it’s suggested to train here with at least level 42 agility.

In this course you have to tag the pillars with flashing arrows above it to receive tickets. Each minute the flashing arrow will move to a different platform in random order. You won’t get a ticket for the first pillar you tag, but every pillar you tag in a row thereafter.
These tickets can be traded with Pirate Jackie the Fruit in Cap’n Izzy No-beard’s hut for agility experience or items.

Try to avoid the handholds and the darts as much as possible, as you fail them a lot at higher levels, especially the darts. It’s worth noting that once you get hit by the darts, your agility decreases by two levels.

Obstacle Experience
Easy obstacles(level 1 required)
Planks 6
Rope swing 20

Werewolf Skullball

Requirements:
25 Agility and a Ring of Charos
You’ll be attacked by one or two Ghasts, so there is a chance they rot some of your food.

Notes:
To start, talk to the Skullball Boss. In this minigame, you need to shoot the skullball through 10 goals as fast as possible. If your time is below 4:00 minutes, you should get the maximum of 750 agility experience. If it takes you more time it to complete the whole course, you get less agility experience.

When right-clicking the skullball, you have four options: tap, kick, shoot and show-goal.

Tap: Kick the skullball 1 space away.
Kick: Kick the skullball 5 spaces away.
Shoot: Kick the skullball 10 spaces away.
Show-goal: Shows an arrow above the goal you currently need to aim on.

The space the skullball travels reduces by one if you kick it through a goal or if it rebounds against a wall.

Toy Mice

Toy mice used to be a great way to train agility at lower levels, giving 15 experience for both succeeding and failing to pick it up. However, the experience has changed to 3 experience for succeeding and 0 experience for failing as this item was meant for fun, not for fast agility experience. This method is now slower experience than the Gnome Stronghold course.

Training

Here I’ll put the fastest methods of training agility at certain levels.

Level 1-25
Gnome Stronghold course
7k experience/hour

Just go through the course in the right order. This won’t take long, probably one hour, maybe one hour and a half.

Level 25-42
Skullball
15k experience/hour

Skullball can be pretty fast at these levels once you get the hang of this minigame. Complete the course as fast as possible for more experience per lap.

Level 43-48
Brimhaven Agility Arena
20k experience/hour

For level 48, you need around 100 tickets (gained experience for obstacles included).
Use Karamja gloves 2 and higher if possible.
Try to avoid the poison darts, they hit often, even at level 99 agility!

From here on, you’ll have two options, until level 90 agility.

Option 1:
Level 48-90
Ape Atoll
At 48-74 agility: 30-40k experience per hour.
At 75+ agility: 45k experience/hour and 50k experience/hour with energy potions.

At early levels(48-64) you’ll fall a lot here, but you stop failing obstacles at level 75.

Option 2:
Level 48-49
Brimhaven Agility Arena
20k experience/hour

Continue using the Agility Arena until level 49, you’ll need around 35 tickets.

Level 49-65
Wilderness Course
30k experience/hour

Drink an agility potion before you walk over the icy ledge leading to the course. Once inside the course, no agility potions are needed. With revenants, this course is worse than before. Do this if you can’t access Ape Atoll yet(though you should do the quest for later levels).
If you see a revenant, just switch worlds.
Note: It’s also possible to use a summer pie to enter the Wilderness course at level 47, but they can be hard to get sometimes.

Level 65-90
Ape Atoll
At 65-74 agility: 35-40k experience/hour
At 75+ agility: 45k experience/hour, 50k experience/hour with energy potions.

Once you have reached level 90, there are two options again.

Option 1:
Level 90-99
Dorgesh-Kaan Course
50k experience/hour, 55-60k experience/hour with energy potions.

This course starts to become better at the high 80’s, but is absolutely better at 90+.
The downsides of this course for some people are that you can fail obstacles and you need to remember the item you have to get for the cave goblin.
Even with failing obstacles, this course is faster at level 90+ agility. There are some ways to remember the object you’ve to get, like putting your spanner in a certain inventory spot for a certain item, or put the name of the item in your ignore list.

Option 2:
Level 90-99
Ape Atoll
45k experience/hour, 50k experience/hour with energy potions.

This method is a bit slower than Dorgesh-Kaan, but this course may be easier for some people, as you don’t need to remind any items and you can do some easy, mindless agility training.

6. Achievement Cape - Skill cape guide

Once you hit level 99, you can buy the Agility skillcape from Cap’n Izzy No-beard in Brimhaven at the entrance of the Agility Arena.
The cape costs 99,000 coins.
